SKOKIE – The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center (IHMEC) has announced its participation in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2014. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The program provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation’s cultural heritage and learn about their new communities after a military move. A participating museum list is available at arts.gov/national/blue-star-museums.
“Our work with Blue Star Families and with more than 2,000 museums ensures that we can thank military families for their service and sacrifice,” said IHMEC Chief Executive Officer Susan Abrams. “We are proud to share the vital stories of the Illinois Holocaust Museum while also bringing our local military and civilian communities together.”
This year, more than 2,000 museums in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa are taking part in the initiative.
The IHMEC is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Holocaust by honoring the memories of those who were lost and by teaching universal lessons that combat hatred, prejudice and indifference. The Museum fulfills its mission through the exhibition, preservation and interpretation of its collections and through education programs and initiatives that foster the promotion of human rights and the elimination of genocide. The Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; Thursday evenings until 8:00 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Learn more at www.illinoisholocaustmuseum.org.
